WHO WE ARE

The McMillon Innovation Studio exists to shape the future by developing and enabling students to be catalysts of innovation. The Studio is home to a community of interdisciplinary, collaborative undergraduate student teams and provides prototyping space for students and faculty across campus to connect and create together.

LEADERSHIP

Rachel Sullivant

We are preparing the next generation of leaders. We are helping to build up students in innovation mindsets such as design thinking, lean canvas, and agile project management; but, above all that it’s about how you look at problems differently.

SPRING ’20 PROJECT TEAMS

The Baby Registry Experience

“I have learned a lot this first semester with the studio, but the biggest thing I’ve taken from all of it would be: when using human centered design, there is not a final answer or solution to the problem at hand. There is always more room for innovation!”

“My experience at the studio is very valuable to me. I have come to know myself better and discover a passion that I am skilled at, product management and market research. I also learned that I like being without boundaries on how I solve the problem I am presented with. I have come to know how adaptable I am to various situations and circumstances that might come suddenly; this was a surprise to me being an engineer who was always trained to follow rigid structure and to always know what is to come.”

Match Maker

“I’ve learned that sometimes you have to think of how a user isn’t static when designing for them. People are dynamic and sometimes they need a solution that’s multifaceted.”

McMillon Health Project

“There are always going to be things that can challenge your progress and hinder your success. This semester the disruption was COVID-19. However, these disruptions have the ability to initiate innovation that can foster positive changes in our world. I am extremely grateful that the studio supports projects that do exactly that.”

The Phed Initiave

“The studio is an environment that constantly forces me to thrive in uncertainty. I have learned that when people with different backgrounds but the same passion put their minds together, viable solutions can be created to solve real problems. Innovation requires understanding the customer and pushing through unforeseen circumstances to design something that’s meaningful and useful to them. I am forever grateful for this experience that has enabled me to think big, but adapt quickly when things don’t go as planned.”

“My experience in the studio was one of excitement, challenge, and growth. It was invaluable because of how it shaped my mindset to not be afraid of failure and to see it as vital to creativity. I learned how to lead and create a team culture that dreams big and executes on bold ideas. I loved getting to work with some of the most interesting, unique, and inspiring people I know.“

The Studio opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities and truly helped to shape what my future will look like. Through my time in the studio I was challenged and  inspired. I also was introduced to a whole new way of thinking that I didn’t even know existed. Design thinking and thinking about the customer’s needs at the root of all problems has fueled every action I have made as a young professional. My time in the studio helped me learn to work across disciplines and recognize the strength in collaboration.
